When it comes to deciding between an iPhone 16 and an iPhone 16 Pro, there are several factors to consider. The 16 Pro, on paper, appears to be a more advanced device with its various key advantages that are hard to ignore. However, it’s not without its drawbacks. The iPhone 16, on the other hand, has its own unique strengths. Let’s take a look at the top four reasons why one might choose the iPhone 16 over the 16 Pro.
Bolder, Brighter Color Options
Apple seems to have this notion that ‘Pro’ means the colors need to be muted. You could sum up the entire iPhone 16 Pro color lineup in just one phrase: various shades of grey. But the iPhone 16, by contrast, showcases more saturated colors and bolder looks. It offers the following vibrant options: Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White, and Black. Even the basic ‘White’ and ‘Black’ options are more vivid and intense than their Pro counterparts, such as ‘White Titanium’ and ‘Black Titanium’. If you desire a more fun and eye-catching look for your iPhone, the iPhone 16 clearly has the advantage over the 16 Pro.
- Ultramarine: A deep, rich blue that stands out and adds a touch of drama.
- Teal: A refreshing and energetic green that brings a sense of vitality.
- Pink: A soft and feminine pink that exudes charm.
- White: A pure and clean white that gives a sleek and modern appearance.
- Black: A classic and timeless black that exudes sophistication.
Those who prefer more bold and colorful aesthetics will find the iPhone 16’s color options to be a compelling draw.
Apple may have intentionally gone for a more subdued color palette on the Pro models, perhaps aiming for a more professional and refined look. However, for many consumers, the iPhone 16’s more vibrant colors offer a unique and appealing visual experience.
Noticeably Lighter Weight than Pro Models
Weight has been a weakness for the Pro line over the years. But last year saw a positive shift with the introduction of titanium, which made the iPhone 15 Pro models noticeably lighter. Unfortunately, this year Apple seems to be taking a step back. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are heavier than their predecessors. If weight is a significant factor for you, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are significantly lighter than the 16 Pro and Pro Max. Here are the weight comparisons:
- iPhone 16: 170 grams
- iPhone 16 Pro: 199 grams
- iPhone 16 Plus: 199 grams
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: 227 grams
For those who prefer a lighter device that is easier to handle and carry, the lighter weight of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus can be a significant advantage. While the Pro models may offer other advanced features, the added heft might not be appealing to everyone.
It’s interesting to note that Apple’s decision to increase the weight of the Pro models could be due to various factors, such as incorporating more advanced components or trying to maintain a certain level of durability. However, for users who value a lighter device in their hands, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are a more appealing option.
Easier Fit in the Hand
Some users prefer the largest iPhone they can get. If that’s your preference, the Pro line with its larger displays is the way to go. However, for many, there is a strong desire to keep the iPhone more compact. Especially for those who miss the iPhone mini, the large displays of the 16 Pro can be a drawback rather than a benefit. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are generally smaller in size compared to the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. As a result, they are a bit easier to hold, especially for one-handed use. They also fit better in pockets. Here is a breakdown of the sizes for the entire lineup:
iPhone 16 | iPhone 16 Pro | iPhone 16 Plus | iPhone 16 Pro Max | |
Height | 5.81” (147.6 mm) | 5.89” (149.6 mm) | 6.33” (160.9 mm) | 6.42” (163 mm) |
Width | 2.82” (71.6 mm) | 2.81” (71.5 mm) | 3.06” (77.8 mm) | 3.06” (77.6 mm) |
Depth | 0.31” (7.8 mm) | 0.32” (8.25 mm) | 0.31” (7.8 mm) | 0.32” (8.25 mm) |
The differences may seem small, but the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus offer a more streamlined and comfortable grip compared to their Pro counterparts. This can make a significant difference in the overall user experience.
The Top Advantage: iPhone 16 Price
And perhaps the single most significant advantage of the iPhone 16 is its price. The Pro models start at a $200 premium over the non-Pros. That means to upgrade to the $999 Pro from the $799 starting price of the iPhone 16, you have to shell out an additional $200. For many buyers, this can be a substantial amount. The iPhone 16 Plus has an even more compelling price advantage. Since the 16 Pro Max starts with 256 GB of storage instead of 128 GB, there is a larger price gap. The iPhone 16 Plus starts at just $899, while the 16 Pro Max is $1,199, a $300 difference. Its $1,199 starting price is a whopping 33% higher than the iPhone 16 Plus. Here are the price comparisons:
- iPhone 16: $799
- iPhone 16 Pro: $999
- iPhone 16 Plus: $899
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: $1,199
This price difference can be a deciding factor for many consumers, especially those who are on a tighter budget or who don’t see the need for all the advanced features of the Pro models. The iPhone 16 offers a more affordable option without sacrificing too much in terms of performance and functionality.
